The Red Door Project

As the name suggests, The Red door is the focal point or the core feature of the house. The red door was a leap of faith that the clients showed on the designers. A bold choice which needed courage, we’d like to think .
With few civil & carpentry changes, the Master bedroom door was camouflaged with the main panel that formed the background to the living and dining area. The Idea was to add an artistic touch to the backdrop along with a colour pop, through the door element, as rest of the living and dining area had been maintained in monochrome shades. The eclectic vintage theme starts right from the entrance lobby of the house – As the Left wall is uplifted by the backlit onyx backdrop whereas the rustic exposed brick wall highlights the vintage study room. The Antiques curated by the us , on display stands, give a hint and feel of the theme, that the house owns. The leather cladded stand adds to the classic vibe.

The Gold finished metal display and the red door are the highlight of the living room. Clients ‘love for books had helped us ideate & incorporate the shelving feature which also turned out be a highlight of the living room and helped us enhance the space with more antiques and art on display along with the classic hardbacks. The characteristic s of the kitchen is a combination of Grey and brushed gold finished – tall counter which not only highlights the kitchen but also adds a key element / backdrop to the dining space. The Dining room ‘s classic vibe is symbolized by the wooden log table & vintage chandeliers. The Monotones are consistent throughout the space including the upholstery hence allowing the red door to stand out. The Master bedroom is classic yet comfortably modern. The Study desk in the master bedroom was a significant aspect both functionally & aesthetically, our client being a writer spends maximum time on the desk & hence it had to be the most appealing as well as practical / comfortable area of the room. The champagne striped wallpaper & vintage family frames helped us add the old-world charm to the space. The Glass partition looking into the bathroom helped us add length to the room. The marble bathroom with gold fittings seems like a tailored fit in this elite bedroom. The bright and colourful kids’ room was planned to get a central open space for the little client to play. While bookshelves & niches make the room functional, the prints, frames and wallpaper fill this room with a positive vibe, a child can grow up happily in. Our client’s affection for books helped us ideate & visualize a vintage study. As you enter the study, it transports you to an old-world library / study from the Victorian era amalgamated with the comfort of modern times. The frames sourced from antique markets helped in adding the desired look & feel to the room. The vintage desk & wooden panelling are the key features of the space.

The client’s fondness for artsy interiors along with their love for books helped us carve out various elements in the house which were both functional and aesthetic. Each of their functional requirements turned out to be an opportunity to add an artistic touch to the space.

When homeowner’s jay and Priya bought their first flat, they didn’t see bare walls and empty spaces. Both love staycations in luxurious hotels in and around Mumbai and they wanted a house which would steep them in the same luxury without taking away from the comfort and well nested feel of a home.

  • Priya being a writer knew that this was the most important story in her life…for her , the house was like a character from her scripts, a breathing living entity and like all characters it couldn’t be black or white… so Grey became the theme.

  • Both jay and Priya have roots connected to old world charm. For Jay the old colonial buildings in South Mumbai where he spent most of his childhood and for Priya the old British architecture from the bungalows she stayed in while growing up as an IAS officer’s daughter played a very important part in the vintage look that the house had.

  • The clients found us though social media.

The Décor is very much eclectic with vintage vibes dominating the mix.
Dark grey marble floor and dark grey walls cover the living and dining area Different shades of wooden floor in each bedroom define & narrate a different story for each room. The Red door was customised at site in M.D.F. panels. Exposed bricks & onyx panels also define certain spaces in the house
